Good post by Seth ostensibly on applying blog principles we all know to writing in general, which as Iain points out actually does a nice job of summarizing these same principles most of us clearly don’t apply in our blogging practice either.
My sins so far have largely been committed around points 2, 3 and 8. Basically my natural inclination is to try and to write a white paper every time I create a post, which is not really the point. The idea of piling on a new idea or reference every day that builds upon a central thesis is a very good one. Many successful bloggers do exactly this, and the repetition helps hammer the theme home and make it stick.
As anyone who has ever read my emails will testify, brevity is not exactly my strong suit either. Again, I want to walk the audience down through a path of logic and supporting evidence, so they arrive at exactly the same conclusions I did. But in this day and age there’s something to be said for respecting your audience’s time and getting to the point. Which is the same skill you see applied in many great presentations. Maximum impact in least amount of slides wins.
So, more killer visuals, graphs and bold statements. Better start learning Illustrator then…
